Call for Artists

Houston190 invites Houston and Harris County artists to apply for a public art opportunity celebrating the city’s 190th birthday. Selected artists will help design a large-scale mosaic mural along the Columbia Tap Corridor, collaborating with Reginald C. Adams to honor the area’s cultural legacy ahead of FIFA 2026.

REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS (RFQ)

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Houston190 is a landmark public art initiative led by visionary artist Reginald C. Adams in partnership with local organizations including the Friends of the Columbia Tap and Career and Recovery Resources, honoring Houston’s 190th birthday and the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup. This monumental 3,000 square foot mosaic mural will be installed along the historic Columbia Tap Trail, spanning neighborhoods like the Medical Center, Third Ward, Chinatown, Eastwood, and EaDo.

The mural is artist-driven and community-powered, blending historical storytelling with vibrant, participatory design and construction. It is an homage to the city's evolution and an invitation to co-create a cultural landmark.

PURPOSE OF THE RFQ

This RFQ is issued to identify qualified Houston-area artists with demonstrated experience in design, visual storytelling, street art, murals, public art, and/or community-engaged design to support and participate in the design phase of the Houston190 Mosaic Mural Project.

ELIGIBILITY

This call is open **exclusively to artists residing in Houston or Harris County, Texas**. Individuals, artist teams, or collectives are encouraged to apply.

PROJECT DETAILS

Medium: 2D renderings, drawings, digital designs or original artwork.
Site: Columbia Tap Hike and Bike Trail (multiple wall segments)
Timeline: December 2025 – February 2026
Budget: $5,000.00

SELECTION CRITERIA

* Artistic excellence and innovation
* Experience in public and/or mosaic art
* Collaborative or community engagement experience
* Cultural relevance or connection to the project themes
* Ability to commit to the project timeline

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Artist Statement (max 500 words)
2. Resume or CV
3. 10 images of past work (JPEG or PDF with descriptions)
4. 3 references familiar with your work
5. Brief letter of interest or video introduction
