Community Engagement Through the Arts

A series of captivating public art projects have been installed in Midtown Houston. Funded by a generous $1M grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, HueMan:Shelter brings together artists and individuals experiencing homelessness to create powerful visual stories based on their lived experiences.
It’s a social awareness campaign bolstering Houston’s successful interventions to address homelessness.

The HueMan UpRise large scale mural at Career & Recovery Resources is the landmark flagship mural of the HueMan Shelter series.   Led by visionary public artist Reginald Adams and his team, this mural embodies the essence of what it means to disrupt the public's perception of the unhoused and homelessness by engaging them in the design and co-creation of the production of the mural.

Power of Public Art

The HueMan UpRise mural is a vibrant visual testament to the transformative power of public art when it is rooted in community and co-creation. Designed and produced in collaboration with members of Career & Recovery Resources and the UpRise Enterprise Program, the mural reflects the lived experiences, aspirations, and healing journeys of those often left out of the public narrative. Through months of creative engagement, including vision boarding, sacred geometry workshops, sound meditations, and community paint days, the mural emerged not only as a work of art but also as a mirror of resilience and collective strength.

Every color, symbol, and face within the mural holds meaning and tells a story of recovery, self-expression, and the reimagining of one's future.  More than just a beautiful wall, this project served as a workforce development initiative that empowered participants with hands-on training in design, mural production, and creative problem-solving. By integrating art into the healing and recovery process, we not only transformed the exterior of Career & Recovery Resources but also helped spark transformation within the individuals who contributed to it.

This mural stands as a living example of how public art can activate space, build skills, shift perspectives, and provide a platform for those whose voices deserve to be seen and heard.
